Management for the N0 Neck of SCC in the Oral Cavity

چکیده
The oral cavity is the most predominant location in the head and neck region for primary malignant tumors, and more than 90 % cancer consists of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).(Shah and Patel 2003) SCC has a high propensity to early and extensive lymph node metastases. Regarding cancer stage distribution at diagnosis, regional spread is more frequent in cancers of oral cavity and pharynx compared to other cancers, including such as prostate, breast, lung and bronchus, and colorectum (Figure 1).(Jemal et al. 2010) Therefore, clinicians for cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx have to regard regional metastasis as most important. Advanced SCC of the oral cavity has regional metastasis frequently, and even in small tumors (T1 or T2) has a relatively high propensity of regional lymph node

Regarding the prevalence of cancer in tongue and the management procedure of cases who have recurrence in cervical lymph nodes after partial glossectomy and in order to determine appropriate management of neck in early oral tongue cancer it was decided to conduct a study. A retrospective review of 62 patients with T1,2 N0 M0 SCC of the oral tongue treated by only partial glossectomy at Cancer I...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of CT Scan and MRI in The Assessment of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of The Oral Cavity and Its Cervical Lymph Node Metastasis
Introduction: Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is the most common head and neck malignancy. To decrease the side effects of treatment and mortality from disease relapse, careful staging for the proper treatment plan is necessary. The main purpose of this prospective study is to compare the diagnostic value of Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Im-aging (MRI) in oral SCC and its lymph ...

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to compare sentinel node biopsy (SNB) and ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) for preoperative evaluation of the N0 neck in T1 to T2 oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). METHODS Fifty-one consecutive patients with T1 to T2 N0 oral cavity SCC were included in this study. Preoperative ultrasound was performed in all patients. U...

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS The objective of the study was to determine whether sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) can be used to reduce clinical overstaging of cervical nodes in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in a developing world setting. STUDY DESIGN Sentinel and echelon lymph nodes were identified by means of a combination of lymphoscintigraphy, gamma probe and blue dye identificati...

Management of the clinically N0 neck in early stage head and neck squamous cell carcinoma remains a challenge for clinicians. Physical examination and radiographic imaging lack the sensitivity and specificity to accurately stage N0 patients leading many surgeons to recommend elective neck dissection for clinically N0 patients whose risk of occult metastasis is greater than 15% to 20%. Pathologi...
